North Carolina Retirement System's "Retirement Benefits"

This handbook provides a thorough explanation of their benefits.

Briefly, the NC401(k) Plan and the special separation allowance are mandated by the state statute, therefore created by the General Assembly. Local governments voluntarily elect to participate in the pension plan (called the Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System), but the System was created by the General Assembly. The benefit formulas listed for the pension benefit and the special separation allowance were established by the General Assembly as well. The General Assembly periodically adjusts the formula for the pension benefit.
